"Finley is one of those photography students whose passion and dedication to the subject is amazing. His technical skills are way above most students at this level of study and he is already starting to get noticed nationally too."

"Finley’s photography is some of the best composed and technically executed photography I have ever seen from a first year student in the first term of the course. The final magazine is also beautifully designed and produced to such a high standard," said Tobie Loates, Subject Leader for Photography.
The week
The competition, hosted by The Week Junior, invited young photographers to submit photos showcasing British wildlife and nature. With the chance to be featured on the cover only happening once every year, Finley’s stunning Kingfisher shot caught their attention. Finley discovered his photo had been selected for the magazine’s cover a month after submitting it, and describes the moment as “crazy and unbelievable”.
Seeing Fins work on newsstands across the UK was a surreal experience for the young photographer, who couldn’t resist picking up two copies of the magazine from WHSmith.

"“Finley is one of those photography students whose passion and dedication to the subject is amazing. His technical skills are way above most students at this level of study and he is already starting to get noticed nationally too, recently having his work on display in the Photography and Video Show 2024 at the NEC” said Tobie Loates, Subject Leader for Photography.
Nationally recognised by the age of seventeen, Finley McDonald has emerged as a standout talent in wildlife photography during his time at Arts University Plymouth’s Pre-Degree centre. His passion for British wildlife, nurtured through childhood encounters with nature, has developed into a mature, visually arresting practice that blends technical excellence with environmental storytelling. From winning the front cover competition for The Week Junior Science + Nature magazine with a striking Kingfisher image, to accepting a place at Falmouth University to study BA (Hons) Natural and Marine History Photography with a professional placement year, Finley’s achievements speak volumes.
Finley’s final major project, ‘Images for Change: Wildlife & Conservation’, is a self-published zine shot across Dartmoor, Saltram, Plymbridge and Cann Woods. It makes a quiet but powerful case for conservation, with standout images, reflecting a deep respect for the natural world and a growing belief in photography’s role as a force for change.
